Engaging Future Stewards: Youth Participation in the Design of Natural and Cultural Environments

Effective stewardship of our cultural and natural resources will require the support and understanding of upcoming generations of visitors, donors and advocates. And, families need opportunities to engage with public lands together and in meaningful ways. Collaboration among agencies, regions or facilities can further leverage investments in the programs and places dedicated to learning through play. In this workshop, we’ll posit that direct and intentional engagement of children is essential to the survival of our public lands, parks, and wild spaces. We will also discuss how to engage kids and families –both directly, during the design process, and effectively, through projects that are informed by the research describing the valueof engaging children in nature and culture in meaningful ways. A baseline premise is that we must provide kids with opportunities to love and care for the natural world before we ask them to protect it.

Telling Our Collective Stories Through the 990 and Guidestar

The 990? The IRS form that provides the public with financial information about a nonprofit organization. Guidestar? An information service specializing in reporting on U.S. nonprofit companies. So, as a community, how do we use our 990s and Guidestar to tell a compelling story about our work for public lands? Should we develop consistent standards for our 990s? This working session follows up on the 2017 Functional Accounting session to identify common best practices and ways for each member organization to tell both their unique and our collective story. Bring your organization’s 990 to work with as we continue the review of 990 and Guidestar - all as a means to an end to arrive at a fascinating story of support for public lands.
