Veterans bring a deep sense of mission, leadership, and teamwork—qualities that align naturally with public lands stewardship. In this webinar, we’ll hear from Michael “Chappy” Chappell of the Arizona Trail Association about how organizations can more effectively engage veterans by moving beyond traditional volunteer models and creating opportunities rooted in purpose, connection, and continued service.
Drawing on ATA’s VETS (Veteran Engagement & Trail Stewardship) Program, Chappy will share why veteran-focused programming matters, how engagement strategies may differ from those used with other volunteer groups, and practical approaches to building authentic relationships with veteran communities. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of how to begin or strengthen veteran engagement efforts within their own organizations.

Michael “Chappy” Chappell is the Director of the VETS (Veteran Engagement & Trail Stewardship) Program at the Arizona Trail Association, where he leads efforts to connect veterans and their families to the 800+ mile Arizona National Scenic Trail through conservation and service. Since 2019, the program has engaged more than 500 veterans and contributed over 65,000 volunteer hours in support of Arizona’s public lands.
A veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Chappy found healing and purpose in the outdoors, a path that led him to study Outdoor Education and Conservation with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Today, he designs and leads programs that blend trail stewardship with community and connection, working in partnership with land managers and veteran-serving organizations across the state.
