How to Teach your Board Members to Work with Legislators

Not all nonprofit public lands organizations engage in advocacy and lobbying, though many do. Working with elected officials can be an important strategy in achieving our goals, and volunteer board members can be extremely effective in carrying an organization’s message. But what if some board members are shy or uncomfortable about being engaged in the legislative process? How can we help them understand exactly what to do? Join us to discuss:

  • What role do board members have in advocacy/lobbying?

  • What information should be covered in a training session?

  • What materials should be developed?

  • What other support will board members need to be successful?

Presenters:

  • Cathy Allen, Principal, The Board Doctor, LLC

  • Laura Herrin, CEO, American Conservation Experience

  • Christina Hazard, Associate Director, National Parks Conservation Association
