Beyond the Park Gates: Building Meaningful Virtual Connections to Public Lands with K-12 Classrooms

The future of public lands depends on their ability to reach and inspire the next generation of stewards that reflect the diverse makeup of our nation, no matter where they live. But how can public lands sites form meaningful virtual connections with classrooms that captivate and engage students? Distance learning can be the spark that ignites curiosity and connects them to public lands.

In this case study session, participants will learn about a variety of different distance learning modalities, including a case study into how nonprofit Post Pigeon EDU has used asynchronous video postcards to connect students with public lands across the U.S. We’ll share lessons from working with 10+ National Parks, focusing on how to design for site-specific constraints, maximize impact, and create programs that inspire real-world engagement.

Attendees will leave with practical strategies for approaching digital outreach, form deeper virtual connections, and ensure that students drive the learning experience.

Takeaways:

  • How virtual connections can spark curiosity and expand student exposure to public lands

  • Tips for designing distance learning programs that align with site goals, constraints, and educator needs.

  • Strategies for fostering curiosity-driven, student-led learning programs demonstrated through case study exemplars
